Immobilisation Mattress - Vac Mat

The Vacuum Immobilisation Mattress is a medical device, which is used to immobilise patients for transportation. The mattress is especially useful, where vertebra, pelvic or limb trauma is suspected.

The Vacuum Mattress, also known as Vac Mat, is useful for transporting patients over short distances and acts as a stretcher.

Not only are vacuum mattresses more comfortable, but they can adapt to all traumas and ensure the patient is held securely. The vacuum mattress can be perfectly adjusted to the shape of the body, which lowers the risk of secondary injuries. Using a vacuum mattress distributes pressure more evenly, which inhibits the risk of pressure ulcer formation.

The vaccum mattress is designed for the safe, comfortable immobilisation of casualties. Once the air has been pumped out the stretcher becomes rigid and moulded around the casualty meaning the patient is safely immobilised and can then be transported more easily.

  • Easily adjust the mattress to be soft or hard, using the dual-action pump
  • X-ray and MRI compatible
  • Constructed from isolative and cold-resistant PVC
  • Supplied with a pump and carry bag

How to Use a Vacuum Mattress
Place the casualty on the mattress, preferably using a scoop stretcher or spinal board and then continue to wrap and fold the sheet against the body, ensuring the head keeps clear and the valve is at the feet of the casualty. Then pump air until the mattress is rigid. The valve is then safe to close and you can fasten the straps.

HSE guidance clearly states employers have a legal duty of care towards their employees. This includes arranging equipment to ensure employees receive immediate attention if an injury were to occur at work. If your assessment of needs suggests your workplace has a risk of causing head, neck and spinal injuries, it would be worth considering a vacuum mattress or other immobilisation devices.
